Body cameras now an “essential part of a police officer’s uniform”

15-02-2016

A new ITV documentary reveals how body cameras are becoming an essential part of a police officer's uniform.

The above video shows an interview with PC Alex Prentice, who faced a knife-wielding attacker on his beat in Northamptonshire. The incident was captured on his Reveal body camera.

Regarding the video, PC Prentice said "You can see that his eyes are bulging; he's looking very very angry, he's making big arm movements; he's got clenched fists; he's making stabbing movements with the knife."

The officers were responding to a call about a domestic incident last March and as they approached the property they found Vickers at the front door holding the large blade.

Despite the man’s attempted attack, PC Wishart eventually managed to distract Vickers before PC Prentice, using his police baton, managed to restrain and disarm him.

Vickers was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and attempted assault, and later jailed for three-and-a-half years.

A statement by the Northamptonshire Police said:

"They both demonstrated courage, cool resilience and outstanding professionalism in the face of extreme danger."

Heroes and Villains: Caught On Camera is on ITV at 9pm on 16th and 23rd February.
